Newsweek covers the Presidential race
Posted December 1st, 2008 by notesdesignThese selected covers are from the table of contents from Newsweek’s post presidential issue. Here are some of the things that are fascinating to me about this selection:
Hillary Clinton’s portrait cover is fairly close to the camera, followed by Michelle Obama’s slightly farther away portrait, and Cindy McCain’s most remote portrait. Sarah Palin’s portrait photo [...]
A Short Story About “Back To Top” Links
Posted November 28th, 2008 by notesdesign
Often it is the close attention to small details that makes a design outstanding. During the development of a website, designers tend to quickly forget about small details and focus on major design elements, such as navigation, typography and layout. If done properly, the result is usually a solid, impressive and highly professional design that communicates information. However, it is not memorable.
How designers charge their clients
Posted November 14th, 2008 by notesdesignDavid Airey asked me to participate in his thought-provoking series “How Designers Charge Their Clients.” He’s asked designers from all over the world, with different specialites and amounts of experience, for their working practices. I’m very flattered to be included in Part 2 of the three part series. Check it out for some very interesting [...]
Graphic Design fails
Posted November 10th, 2008 by notesdesignI love failblog.org. If you could use a laugh, check it out. I’ve posted some of my favorite design related fails below. Bad design always reminds me that good design really is important. Some of the best design is the kind that you hardly even see, or at least notice. You wouldn’t give that Vermont [...]
November Desktop
Posted November 7th, 2008 by notesdesignI can’t seem to resist designing these desktops. My “Thanks Gratitude Wonder” is up there with 49 more free desktop designs from designers all over the world.
Thanks again for including me, Smashing! www.smashingmagazine.com
Smashing
Posted September 29th, 2008 by notesdesignI linked to Smashing Magazine’s monthly free desktop designs before, but I’m doing it again because this month one of the entries they posted is from… me. Yippee! Scroll down more than halfway to find my “Halloscene”.
Even if you don’t want to download my desktop (and really, I’d never know), you should check it out [...]
Busy
Posted September 23rd, 2008 by notesdesignThe good news is that I’m too busy to post. The bad news is that I’m too busy to post. Here’s a quickie, and once I wrap up a couple of things I’ve been working on, I’ll hop back in the blogging saddle.
Many designers use Lorem Ipsum as dummy text in their layouts. Why?
It is [...]
Internet Explorer 5 and 6 on a Mac!
Posted September 2nd, 2008 by notesdesignIf you don’t know why the headline of this post necessitated an exclamation mark, it’s because Microsoft stopped making Internet Explorer for a Mac at version 5. They’re now up to version 7. Why do I care? Well, if I wasn’t a web designer, I wouldn’t. I love me some Firefox, and am completely happy [...]
Why are models so much better looking than I am?
Posted August 8th, 2008 by notesdesign
Check out Glenn Feron’s retouching skills. I truly couldn’t look away. No wonder you never see anyone in real life who looks like a magazine model. They don’t even look like themselves. Even Faith Hill is not as hot as… Faith Hill. As a designer who has done her share of retouching, I’m impressed at [...]
What do designers do all day?
Posted July 10th, 2008 by notesdesignCheck out this fabulous video following the progress of a magazine layout. FYI, the designer is using InDesign. My favorite part is when he just gives up on the headline and inserts a row of Xs. I’d guess that he just got the sixty-seventh email from his editor saying, “Sorry, but we changed the head [...]
Web Creme is delicious
Posted June 20th, 2008 by notesdesignI’m always on the lookout for inspiring design, and Web Creme delivers. I may not find all of the featured designs particularly noteworthy, but many of the linked sites have found their way into my “Inspiration” bookmarks folder. I especially like the color palette tool. Each design has a color scheme represented as tiny [...]
Watching TV is good for you
Posted June 9th, 2008 by notesdesignJust ask GDUSA magazine.
In their annual roundup of logo design trends I read the following:
Finally, it’s worth noting that there’s a reasonably reliable place to look every day for the very latest in logo design (in addition, to LogoLounge.com, that is): television promo graphics for any of the major “style” channels — Food Network, Discovery, [...]
Good Ideas from FPO Magazine
Posted May 5th, 2008 by notesdesignLike many designers, I am a sucker for a good magazine. I read all sorts, but design magazines, when done well, really ring my bell. That’s why I was very excited to get a complimentary copy of FPO Magazine in the mail two days ago. And that’s their first good idea — the magazine really [...]
Photography + typography
Posted April 22nd, 2008 by notesdesignFred Herzog. Three Theaters, 1957.
That is some gorgeous photo. Over the cacophony of the neon signs and street lights, the typefaces on the signs are like candles in the night. This photo is from 1957 and it shows in the letterforms, but in many ways it seems totally contemporary to me. The gallery site says [...]
Daily Resources
Posted March 10th, 2008 by notesdesignThere are some web sites that I couldn’t live (or at least work) without. I visit them multiple times in a week and they make my life much, much easier. I’ll share.
identifont.com My secret is out: Every time someone calls or emails me asking for the name of a font he’s seen (and BJ, I [...]
